Delta Flight Hits Bird and Returns to Phoenix
November 3rd, 2009According to reports, a pilot on a Delta Air Lines flight had to call an emergency after the plane he was flying hit one or more birds. Authorities noted that the plane was in route to Utah at the time of the hit. However, the plane was said to have safely returned to Phoenix after the bird strike.
A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, Ian Gregor, said that the Delta Flight, Flight 1232, took off from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport around 8:40 in the morning last Monday. The plane was on its way to Salt lake City, Utah. On the way, the MD-90 hit one or more birds at a considerable distance from the airport. The pilot then declared an emergency, and the plane landed back at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport at 9:01 in the morning.
A spokesman for Delta Air Lines, Anthony Black, said that their were 127 passengers and five crew members on the plane at the time of the strike. However, there were no injuries to report after the lane landed back down in Phoenix. The Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said that bird strikes normally happen daily and pilots are trained to deal with them accordingly.
Just this year, back in January, a US Airways flight crash landed into the Hudson River after hitting a whole flock of birds over New York. All of the 155 people that were on board the flight were pulled to safety. The pilot on that plane was viewed as a hero for his ability to handle the bird strike and touchdown without any injuries on board.
