The Kolkata airport will expand its runway and build a taxiway for the Airbus A380, the world’s largest commercial aircraft. The work is to be completed by 2009-end, an official said Saturday.
‘We plan to extend the 2,400-metre runway at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport by 840 metres. A taxiway with a minimum width of 23 metres will be built to make room for the wide-bodied aircraft. The taxi shoulders will be around 30 metres wide to avoid damaging the wings of the A380,’ airport director V.K. Monga told IANS.

Eagan-based Northwest will use the new Airbus A330 to offer service from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to Paris. The carrier had originally announced the new route in October, and said that it would also add 39 new European connections beyond Paris through a code-share program with Air France. The carrier will offer service to destinations throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East from the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.

European aircraft maker Airbus said Monday it had secured 341 orders by the end of February this year, including 110 medium-haul A320s for China.
Its great US rival Boeing had chalked up 190 orders by March 4.
Airbus said in a statement that the orders included 50 of its long range A350 XWB (extra wide body) models, which will come into service in 2013.

Singapore Airlines will convert its five A340-500 ultra-long-range aircraft into an all-business class configuration, for daily flights between Singapore and New York, and Singapore and Los Angeles.
The current two-class, 181 seat, arrangement will be replaced with 100 seats, in a 4-abreast, 1-2-1, layout. Every seat will have direct access to the aisle, and will convert to a fully-flat bed. The carrier’s executive vice president marketing and regions, Huang Cheng Eng, said the change recognises the popularity amongst business travellers of the award-winning business class products introduced on other aircraft type.
“The peak demand for the non-stop flights is from our business class customers, and this change will expand business class capacity from 64 to 100 seats on each flight,” said Huang.
